Try living on the coast during the summer months then!!! We get completely overloaded with all the tourists, nowhere to park, going to the bank is a day out! Traffic worse than run hour in London and coupled with the heat – is a two month headache for anyone living on the Spanish coasts. Roll on september I say every year!

Well I think that in the UL they also have 30 days paid off for holidays. It is only in the US where they don’t have any by law. What a crazy country! They don’t even have the basic human rights like universal healthcare!

To take the whole month of August for vacation it is very common in many european countries like France, Italy, etc. Keep in ming that in Europe we have at least 30 days paid off per year for holidays in addition to the national and local holidays like christmas new year eve, etc etc. So it is normal that we take our holidays in summer. In the US since you don’t have that by law and it depends on where you work, people can take so much time, otherwise they would!

Wow, I never noticed that in Spain. But I think thats because of the tourist regions are a bit different to other regions.

I knew that the dutch are traveling quite a lot during summer and that most of them leave the netherlands.

@Abi – I agree… I start to think “this lifestyle is great” and then I realize that the exact shop I need is closed for the next three weeks and I get a little upset. haha

Seville has been something of a ghost town in August…except for language students and tourists. There’s a similar exodus in France. When we lived in Toulouse, even the post office closed.

It’s the sort of thing that makes me think that this way of life must be better for the soul and for countries in the long run…until it interferes with something I want to do ;0)

@Sarah – You’re right, in the south of Spain less shops close because August is the month that all people go there for vacation… so they have to stay open. Thanks for your comment!

I took a trip once to the south of Spain, the beach, and really enjoyed it. It was in August and I didn’t notice what you talk about with things being closed, of course there I guess things probably don’t close in August since it’s the tourist month.
