I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!

Ice cream stands like this one have been popping up all over the city of Burgos recently.

Ice cream stands like this one have been popping up all over the city of Burgos recently.

Just within the last week or two, lots of odd-looking, brown booths like the one pictured above have mysteriously appeared around the city of Burgos.  At first, I wasn’t really sure what these little booths were for since they were all closed and locked up very tightly.  Later, however, when the weather began to break here, these strange little buildings that resemble tool sheds began to open their “hatches” and I soon realized that they were ice cream booths designed to keep passersby cool on those hot, summer Burgos days.

I think it’s a cool (literally “cool”) idea to have ice cream booths strategically placed around the city.  I guess, in a way, these booths are the Spanish version of the familiar “ice cream truck man” that I grew up with in the States.  Speaking of the ice cream truck man, does anybody know if there are ice cream trucks in Spain?  Personally, I’ve never seen one here… I guess the booth is as close as they get to the whole “mobile frozen treats” thing.

Here’s something fun for this post.  Would everyone who reads this post please write a short comment below telling me what your favorite ice cream flavor is? When I get enough comments (hopefully in about a week’s time), I’ll make a definitive list of the “top ten” ice cream flavors according to abroadinspain.com readers and will publish the list here on the blog.

Hasta luego,
–Chris

  • I guess I’ll start off with the ice cream flavor frenzy in the comment section. My favorite flavor is CHOCOLATE… the old, faithful standby.

  • Megan

    I vote for Chocolate Macadamia!!

  • Dave

I send another vote for chocolate… I like to keep it simple.

  • Jillian

    Vanilla!!!

  • David

It’s a difficult choice, uhm… Stracciatella for me, please!

PS: Does anybody know why “tropical” flavor is blue? I can’t recall any edible vegetable/animal/fruit/anything that it’s actually blue. It looks like a disturbing unnatural color choice. It’s sometimes called “helado pitufo” (smurf ice cream) which suits better the color, but I still don’t feel like eating “that”. Anybody with me?

PS2: Wow, my postscript is way larger than my actual message.

    Un saludo.

  • Krissa

My favourite is Coffee flavour! Ever since I went to spain when I was 5 and I lived on it for 2 weeks!

  • @David – Good question…. I have no idea why tropical flavor is blue…. and now that you mention it, I would prefer not to eat blue ice cream either.

@Krissa – Living on coffee flavor ice cream???? I don’t like the taste of coffee so that would be a big “no-no” for me. haha

Thanks for the comments guys, keep them coming so we can see if any one flavor “wins” over the others!!!!

  • Lucía

    is strange but love it

This is probably a purely Southern US flavor, but Butter Pecan is my favorite. Is that popular anywhere else?

  • @Chris P-T – I’m from the north of the USA and I know that we have Butter Pecan there as well, although I think it’s less popular than what it is in the south.

Keep the comments coming everyone! I’m enjoying them!

  • rosalyn

    very cool!

  • @Rosalyn – What, no vote for a flavor? hahaha

  • Meg

I’d have to say my favorite is marron glace – never had it anywhere but Rome (and funny story, it was also the favorite of Pope John Paul II) but I love it!

Random sidenote: I never knew what it was, but I just Googled it out of curiosity and apparently it’s candied chestnuts. That sounds kind of disgusting, but I swear it’s a delicious ice cream flavor!

  • @Meg – Candied Chestnut ice cream? I don’t even know where to begin on that one! hahaha

  • Amanda

Hey! I just found this blog and am very appreciative as I’ll be teaching in Spain this fall.

My favorite flavor is raspberry sorbet (if that counts as ice cream) or anything with caramel!

  • @Amanda – Sure, that counts as ice cream! Ah, and where will you be teaching?

  • Well, it looks like we can’t agree on any flavor trends, can we? I was going to make a list with the top ten flavors, but I don’t see any trends emerging… maybe I need some more comments from some of you visitors to see if any flavors come out on top.

  • Judith

Hard to choose, but I think pistachio

  • Joanne
