@Ian - I'm glad you found the page helpful. As far as intonation goes, Latin American intonation seems to follow English somewhat; however, intonation in Spain's Spanish is much more monotone than in English. The rhythm is also different -- don't forget tip #2 above.

Excellent University of Iowa Phonetics Page resource on tongue placement and vocal chord vibration. It took three months for at least thirty minutes a day of incorporating proper tongue placement into vocal formation. But you're advice to get the vowels down has proved INVALUABLE. Thank you! It'd be interesting to see thoughts on the blog regarding intonation and general tone of voice. In the states I feel we speak dry and monotone compared to Spaniards. When we want to be extra polite, maybe we'll bring the pitch up slightly but not drastically. I had a tendency to overcompensate at the differences, which after reviewing past recordings sounds affected. The phonetics page helped teach me to block off the pharynx but it's still very much a work in progress. Any insights regarding this admittedly really vague query would help. Thanks again!

Hey, thanks so much for this posting about reducing your accent!

I´m studying at the Universidad de León for this year and, though I pretty fluent in Spanish, I feel like people have been really condescending towards me because of my gringo accent.

I mean, I´ve been studying Spanish rather intensely for years, and it seems like the Spaniards, despite how well I speak the language, just won´t take me seriously because of my accent.

So I have resolved to put your tips into practice every day, at least for the next several months, in hope that I can improve my accent. So thanks again for the posting!

P.S. Love the blog. Super informative and engaging, with some good personality. Great combo. :)

@Michael - Yes, you're right... the accent in Andalucia is quite different. In fact, every time I go down there I have to listen extra closely because I'm so not used to it.

Chris, those are really useful. I have lived in An dalucia for 3 years, where the andaluz dialect is very strong and used by everybody. So I have picked up their "bad" habits -- like missing the "s" of the ends of words: "bueno dia", like omitting the "d" between two vowels; so "hemos hablado" becomes "hemo hablao." All fine when in Andalucia, but when we go to Madrid and forget to change to castellano, the madrileños think we are country bumpkins.
